FAQ's
1. What are replacement double-glazed units? Replacement double-glazed units, also known as replacement insulated glass units (IGUs), are designed to replace the existing glass panes in windows or doors without the need for replacing the entire frame. They offer an efficient and cost-effective solution to upgrade windows with worn or damaged glazing, improve energy efficiency, and enhance the overall performance of the window.
2. Why should I consider replacing my old windows with double glazed units? There are many reasons for replacing glass and double-glazed units. The advantages of modern replacement double glazed units over old units are the thermal efficiency of the unit. Using Argon Gas and Softcoat glass it is possible to achieve a U-Value as low as 1.0. The next common reason is when the unit breaks down and the seal of the unit fails. This allows the moisture to penetrate the unit and causes condensation to form within the unit cavity. If you have a broken window there is no reason to replace the whole window a double-glazed unit can be easily fitted into the frame by simply removing the retaining beads.
3. Can I customise the style and design of replacement double glazed units? Double Glazed Units can be styled and customised to suit your requirements. Whether it's with Georgian Bars, Leaded Pattern, Shaped or glass with pet flap holes or even units that have stepped glass for water run off you choose the options. These options can be applied to any Double-Glazed Units. Of course, there are many types of glass too, including, Self-clean, Anti-sun, safety toughened and laminated glass along with different thicknesses of glass.
4. Do replacement double glazed units improve home security? With the use of toughened safety glass and laminated glass this can improve your home security. Toughened glass is particularly strong and can take many blows before it is penetrated, and laminated glass is also very strong and even when broken it maintains its integrity and holds together to make it extremely difficult to push through and gain access to your home..
5. Are there energy-efficient options available for replacement double glazed units? Yes, modern coatings along with Argon and Krypton Gas filled units it is now possible to replace old units without coatings and gas filled cavities, with new improved energy efficient replacements. Softcoat and Planitherm 1.0 will help reduce thermal transfer and reduce the amount of heat escaping from a room. This can help reduce heating bills and provide for a more comfortable relaxed feel to a property.
6. How long do replacement double glazed units last? Typically you can expect your replacement double glazed unit to last well beyond our 10-year guarantee. With modern production procedures along with approved sealing materials it is likely for the units to last beyond 20 years. The installation is critical to ensure the longest life possible for your replacement double glazed unit. Please refer to the GGF Installation Guide available online.

Here are some key aspects of replacement double-glazed units:
Construction: Replacement double-glazed units consist of two or more glass panes separated by a spacer bar, creating an insulating air or gas-filled space between the panes. The glass panes are typically clear or low-emissivity (Low-E) glass, and the spacer bar may incorporate desiccants to absorb any moisture that could accumulate between the panes.
Customization: Replacement double-glazed units can be custom-made to match the exact size and specifications of the existing window or door. This allows for a seamless and precise fit, ensuring proper installation and performance.
Energy Efficiency: One of the primary benefits of replacement double-glazed units is their enhanced energy efficiency. The insulating space between the glass panes reduces heat transfer, keeping the indoor environment warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. This improved thermal performance can lead to energy savings and reduced heating and cooling costs.
Noise Reduction: The air or gas-filled space between the glass panes also provides improved sound insulation, reducing external noise levels and creating a more peaceful indoor environment.
Environmental Impact: Opting for replacement double-glazed units can be an eco-friendly choice as it allows you to upgrade the energy efficiency of your windows without replacing the entire window frame. This reduces waste and conserves resources.
Installation: Replacement double-glazed units are installed by removing the old glass panes from the window frame and fitting the new IGUs in their place. It's essential to have the units professionally installed to ensure a proper fit, proper sealing, and optimal performance.
Cost-Effectiveness: Compared to replacing the entire window or door, replacing just the double-glazed units can be a more budget-friendly option while still delivering significant energy efficiency and comfort improvements.
Options and Upgrades: Replacement double-glazed units can be upgraded with features such as Low-E coatings, gas fills (e.g., argon or krypton), and warm-edge spacers to enhance their thermal performance and overall efficiency.
It's essential to work with a reputable glass manufacturer or glazing professional to ensure you select the right replacement double-glazed units for your specific needs. They can guide you through the selection process, take accurate measurements, and ensure proper installation for optimal results.
